What about the defense next year?

The offense surely has a lot to like coming back and if you assume some progression from Lock you have to think it's going to be a very good unit. Essentially the entire offense comes back with Culkin being the only major contributor not coming back (I guess Moore could opt for the draft, but that seems pretty unlikely)
Then you have the defense. Bad season, and they'll lose several starters and rotation players.
Guess on the starters
Frazier
Beckner Jr
Logan
Howard
Hall
Biesel
Lee
Cheadle
Hilton
Perkins
Holmes
NB Warren
Going to have to find some depth behind that starting DL. I still like our athletes at LB, but they simply have to play better next year. CB is a huge question mark, and safeties are anyone's guess. You still have the starters from last year (Sherrills and Wilson who could start again) and guys like Taylor and Ross behind them.
I don't know if there are any easy answers here, but I think hitting the restart button will definitely do this group some good.
Not sure if we'll get rid off Cross, but if we do I hope we look to someone with some experience that Odom can lean on more in regards to scheme and playcalling.

I think Garrett starts at LB, also wouldn't surprise me if Miller starts or is in the rotation.
Will also be interesting to see if the team uses 3 LBs or a NB like Warren.
Acy likely starts at CB, the second CB probably isn't on the roster yet.

If the staff stays with a one gap front and a Tampa 2, I'd swap Lee and Hall position wise. I like Hall's length for shedding contact and when he is on the field, he always ends up near the ball.
Beisel and Garrett aren't optimal for that defense but they are what is on the roster.

Lee has also played some Mike in the past, so if you wanted to get more athletic you could have him there and someone else on the outside Baldwin, Miller...maybe the light comes on for Agbasimere? Maybe they even have Warren put on 15lbs and move to LB.
Just seems like they prefer to have a little more physicality at that spot. We'll see. Some moving parts at that spot.

That is a very good point. They would have to ask him to add mass. 220 lbs at MLB for 35+ snaps a game would be brutal in the SEC.
Beisel and Garrett are both Andrew Wilson type players that teams will throw at with success and move the chains.
Agbasimere is at 235 but his this was his 3rd year of organized FB.
I have high hopes for Baldwin.
Odom and Cross have their work cut out for them.

Tavon Ross was a favorite of mine way back when he committed, I hope he can contribute next year.
Gotta think they'll pull in something impactful from JUCO.
Howard and Tre Williams in the mix on the line is going to be nice.
I like the outlook for the defense a lot more than I originally thought.

I'm in the minority here, but I still think Hilton is going to be a star. He's a great athlete and it's hard to really pinpoint but he just has a knack for making plays. He stands out. He just has that "can't be taught" quality.
Now, he absolutely has to become a better tackler. He's, frankly, terrible at it. He is constantly going for the big hit that he can't deliver. That's something that can be fixed, and it has to be.

Give Hilton half of the tackles he missed when he didn't wrap and he would have been 3rd on the team. He would do well to watch a little tape of Braylon Webb and Justin Garrett.

My take on him is different. He seems tentative to take a hit. And when he does try to hit, he usually bounces off like a gnat. He needs to add some major muscle if he wants to be effective.
I do agree that I think he's coachable (or it seems like it). I do wish they left him on offense. I know I'm in the minority, but I'm not super impressed with our WR options. I thought Hilton showed better hands than anyone else last year and would have had the best hands this year.

Hilton is about the same size as Earl Thomas, former Texas and current Seahawks safety. Both Hilton and Perkins could end up being a pretty good safety tandem.
The drops from the WRs definitely need to be fixed. Other than LSU & Florida they were consistently open.

I don't care about size. Just being the same size as someone in the NFL doesn't put you on the same playing field and doesn't mean you hit like one. Go back and watch how many times Hilton lays a hit on someone and bounces off the guy like he's nothing. Reminds me of my wife punching me. Yeah. She's 6'2" and 250 but she hits like a girl.
I do hope you're right about Perkins. Hell, hope you're right about both.

He's bouncing off because he's hitting to high. His instincts are really good for a guy that just played his first year at safety. Film work and coaching can help him develop into a really good player.
Sherrils has to have the worst hands possible, crazy how many dropped ints that he probably retuns for TDs the last 2 years if he could catch.

He could certainly add some strength, and I don't think we disagree. He's a bad tackler, but that is something that can be taught and improved upon. He certainly needs to do that.
He has instincts and a "feel for the game" that can't be taught. I know that all sounds silly and it isn't quantifiable but I firmly believe he's going to be a GREAT player. Some guys just have that "it" quality, and I believe he does.

I hear JQ. I am just bitter he's not on offense still. I really think his instincts for the game were best suited on that side. But it is what it is and hopefully he gets better because this year was about as bad as it gets in the secondary.

What are the odds of Harris coming back next year? Somewhat of a down year but would think he would still make the move.
Posted on 11/28/16 at 12:11 am to ZouDawg88
His conference #s were better this year. Harris led all defensive linemen in tackles during conference play with 53. LSU's Devon Godchaux was 2nd with 45. He had 11 TFLs(5th in SEC play) and 9 sacks (2nd in SEC play).
He gone.
He gone.

I wish somebody would have some info on what the flake happened to Tavon Ross who quite a few of us had high hopes for.

So is the general consensus that the Read & React is not coming back next year?
I haven't heard anything definitive on this.
