I figured some of you guys would know the 'Ham a lot better than I do. I got a pay raise recently, and I'm going to go ahead and buy a place here instead of renting. What areas should I look into, particularly ones that are growing or up-and-coming? I like the areas south of the city mostly, and I currently live around the Avondale area which is pretty neat. Work downtown.

I can probably afford a place around 200-250k, but I'd rather get around 150-170k or so because screw paying a ton for a place to sleep

age? single or married with kids?

In that price range I'd say look in West Homewood and Crestline Park. I have friends that live in Bluff Park and they seem to love it. You MIGHT could find something in parts of Vestavia. Good luck!

I would check out the Crestwood North neighborhood. It's close to where you're at now in Avondale, but it's a little more family friendly, definitely an up-and-coming neighborhood.

I have a great friend who bought a historic house in that neighborhood with his wife and fixed it up. I really like the area.

I have friends(married couple) that did the same thing in Crestwood South.

Sadly Crestline Park prices have gone absolutely bonkers the past couple years. I like the Crestwood area. If you don't hate living in Avondale, 150-170k can probably get you a nice place over there.

I assume you don't have any interest in living downtown. I've got a condo I can sell you in your price range.

up & coming is not homewood ... it done come up ... avondale is probably there or close to it ... if you really wanna beat the rush and get something that will have "arrived" in 15 years, that's east lake ... crestwood still has spots that are affordable ...

If you plan on this changing anytime soon go with Homewood.

Has anyone here lived in an apartment in or near downtown Homewood? I really love their set up and might have a job around Bham set up after graduation.

Chelsea. Good schools. Convenient. Not yet crowded. You should buy now and you'll make good return on investment when you move to bigger home in 5-7 years (it will happen mid 20s guy).

I have a rental there I'll sell you. ETA: sell would be for approx $180 and you'd walk in with equity.

Homewood is weird, you can shop and find a good deal, but a lot of prices are ballooning because the area is very desirable now.

I know someone who lived in The Hill Apartments off of Oxmoor and they were meh.

I live there, and I agree with you

It's a neat area if you are into shopping, and eating out a lot, neither of which I'm into.

Not what you asked but I'm in the mortgage business, 20+ years, and would like an opportunity to help a fellow Bammer with mortgage financing.

I like your mindset on not going to you max price range and beeing what I call "house poor".

Good luck and congrats on the future marriage.

Vestavia is where I am and love it. It's at the high end of your price range, but worth IMO. I lived in Crestline and that would be a good option for you to. Good luck

My wife and I are in the Crestline Gardens area by McElwain Baptist Church. If you don't plan on having kids for a few years it's a great area that right around what you want to be paying. There are a lot of people moving in that area that are around our age and you're close to everything.

The family and I looked hard at the townhouses that were on the edge of Homewood Park. The $600/month HOA dues made us settle on a house.
