Odom's biggest mistake.

Likely not the scheme change itself, but hiring Cross to run it and for the most part "staying out of it".
Cross hadn't any experience running this scheme or calling plays. Odom thought he could teach Cross the scheme and let him implement it with the players.
If he was convinced that this scheme was superior he should have hired a DC that was versed in it. Preferably someone with experience as aDC and play caller.
Now that we've attempted to change course the next DC needs to be versed in whatever we are running next year, and again preferably with experience as a play caller.

Yea experience is going to be key there.
I really thought going into the season that Odom would continue to be the real DC, but that wasn't the case.

Well he did. And then the Eagles snatched the hire leaving Odom to scramble. Since he all but fired him 7 games into the season, I'm thinkin he knows this

Cross coached this scheme and made the line calls while Patterson set the LBs and coverage at TCU. The safeties set several calls for on their side of the field based on field/boundary and personnel
I am pretty sure that Cross was setting the front 7/6 and Walters was calling coverage prior to last Saturday.

I'll take your word for it, but TCU runs a different scheme than what we are using.

They run a 4-2-5
MU ran the same thing except they used Newsom instead of another safety. It's still a Cover Blue/Robber scheme with a 4 man front.

They actually run a fair amount of cover 2 as well, and have run responsibilities for their CBs.
To my knowledge our front and secondary calls are not split either, but I'm not 100% on that.

I don't give a shite if it's a 4-2-5 or a 1-10, if it works and leads to wins. Bottom line is most of the schemes out there will work if executed properly by the proper athletes. Bottom line also is that this scheme with these athletes and these coaches ain't working. Scrap it. Scrap the coaches. Scrap the players.

Yeah, I wish I knew more of what I was looking at on TV scheme wise. Although it's easy to see who's missing tackles or getting bulldozed off the ball. I caught part of the ND-Miami game specifically to watch the DL and I much prefer the optics of an attacking DL playing the run on the way to the QB.
If Navy is reading this thread, here's two questions...
- Is Odom's defense more reliant on all 11 making correct decisions?
- Does Odom's scheme require higher grade of athlete than the previous style?
To me, a disruptive front four making individual plays can render everything behind them moot. If the new scheme requires a better grade of athlete, all carrying out correct assignments as an 11-man unit, it would seem like an almost insurmountable task.
I'd like to hear your thoughts on the above...
