here are a number of medical and other opinions which explain why marijuana is a restricted substance:

I can tell you the only reason why it is:

quote:

“You want to know what this was really all about?” he asked with the bluntness of a man who, after public disgrace and a stretch in federal prison, had little left to protect. “The Nixon campaign in 1968, and the Nixon White House after that, had two enemies: the antiwar left and black people. You understand what I’m saying? We knew we couldn’t make it illegal to be either against the war or black, but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and blacks with heroin, and then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities. We could arrest their leaders, raid their homes, break up their meetings, and vilify them night after night on the evening news. Did we know we were lying about the drugs? Of course we did.”

that's from a former nixon policy advisor. Basically way back in the old days the "system" wanted to go after minorities so they used that darn hippie reefer as their means. If america not only has no issues with alcohol but celebrates, advertises, pushes, and urges us to consume it...then there isn't one single valid reason marijuana should be an arrestable offense. None. And anyone who disagrees just has their head in the sand.

The more I read, the more THC sounds safer than Opiates for my joint pain.

Actually it goes back even further, but you are right in that racism was a huge part in it. Popular mechanics in 1937 predicted Hemp, which is what everyone referred to it as back then, as the number 1 cash crop, projected as a billion dollar crop. Later that year they made marijuana illegal. They used the term marijuana to make it seem like the Mexicans were the ones bringing in this 'drug' when in reality all the white folks were using it but calling it hemp.

Racism wasn't the only reason why it was made illegal, as you can guess $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ had a big part of it. It has been said that DuPont was projected to lose a ton of money because of the future hemp boom, thanks to the new invention which would make the processing of hemp easier thus profitable, similar to the cotton gin for cotton. It goes deeper than just DuPont, although they seem to be a big player in this game as well.

Plus the Gov't did some research on it in the 70's and they were looking for scientific data to justify keeping it illegal, but what they found out was how great of a medicine it truly is. It was also during this time when they established the LD50 of cannabis, but most agree that the only reason why the monkeys died from it, was from the lack of oxygen, and no human or animal could ever smoke that much without having to be restrained and have the smoked forced into your lungs, like with these monkeys. Also it has been calculated by some, that water is so and so many times deadlier to you than cannabis, which is really saying something on the safety of it.
