I did look at the shadow. It disappears at that moment, and the knee abruptly stop moving downward.

The ref who was right there was looking at his knee not at the shadow and agrees as well. Well until he notices where the first down marker is

Also while you can't tell for sure from that angle, no other ref is across the field from him adjusting his spot. The two at the bottom of the screen are just standing there. A 4th jogs toward him from the right of the screen.

Regardless, if there was a ref at midfield adjusting his spot why look backwards at marker and awkwardly stumble shifting his feet towards it and moving the ball? Wouldn't it make sense to look at the guy you are matching the spot with?
