Back in 2001, I was an electrician working on the Colonial Pipeline HQ building get in Alpharetta. The Reader's Digest version is that there are 5 40" pipes that go from Houston to NYC. 3 are owned by Colonial, and the other two are their competitor's - Plantation Pipeline. Every 50 miles or so, there's a pumping station to keep the gas moving.
The way we were told 15 years ago, is that if one of those pumping stations stopped working for more than 30 minutes, the price of gas is negatively affected along the entire East coast. That's why every pump station had a manual override desk in the HQ. The room looked like it was on the Death Star. Obviously a line break is infinitely worse than a pump failure.
Its just interesting to see that what the company folks said years ago turned out to be true.
