Gary and Verne are tv people who want big ratings, when Bama falls behind a team or gets into a dog fight it means good ratings. So if Gary is biased it would make sense for him to be biased against Bama. Not saying he is or isn't biased. I guarantee you when CBS covers a Bama game Gary is hoping for an upset. As are all of the networks who show SEC games

The referee flagged him for hitting a player who was "obviously out of the play"..

Subjective penalties need to go. QBs are specifically protected after turnovers but no other position is -- fair game IMO

you would as a Rebel fan.

As a I don't care about either team guy, Gary was spot on calling out those pitiful refs.

That game was a officiating shitshow from start to finish

#justiceforhurts

Gary is a pioneeer and should be lauded with praise and awards. Maybe even a noble peace

For real though, definitely one blown call and i agree with Gary that it should have been flagged for targeting so at least it would have been reviewed.

It was pretty ridiculous, he went on for maybe 10 mins about it.
True, but wouldn't that make it worse to still be going on about him going on for ten minutes well into the next day?

It's the little things people never consider. :Coco2:

So no more holding, pass interference, roughing, unsportsmanlike, etc. Sounds like a plan.

Those are all well defined penalties if you look at the rulebook.

Define "obviously out of the play".

If a player is pursuing a ball carrier is he out of the play? If the ball carrier fumbles and a player is 20 yards away.. could he recover? 30 yards away? 40 (~3.5 seconds to arrive if he is already running)? Not easy to put a definition on "obviously out of the play".

The call was unnecessary roughness. Had nothing to do with where he was on the field.

How many times did Gary mention the 2013 iron bowl?

Gary chose to focus on the flag for what seemed like 20 minutes instead of all the other things going on that he could discuss.

An unbiased announcer would focus on the fact that Bama needed to fix its blocking and regroup.

Hell, one could also just give Ole Miss credit and discuss momentum.

Either way, Gary the homer dwells on It until he is satisfied instead of just moving on to live action.

Unnecessary roughness isn't a rule. It's a catch-all phrase that encompasses several rules.

What's ironic about the whole thing is that hit and subsequent return was the turning point of the game. After that scoop and score, the Tide went on a 45-6 run that was sparked, inarguably, by that play.

So Danielson was right to overanalyze it as that was the key moment in the game.

The hit on Hurts was absolutely targeting, and the personal foul on #9 was clearly before the touchdown, so Danielson was right on both accounts.

And the ole miss fans claim that the refs were favoring Alabama.

So what's your point? Unnecessary roughness is a personal foul. It doesn't matter where it happens on the field. Many times it's not on the field at all.

My point is that the personal foul was for contact against a player who was "obviously out of the play". I think it's a dumb rule because 10 different refs can draw the line in 10 different ways. A hit on a defender 4 yards behind Trindon Holliday could be construed as out of the play because he has no chance at making a play.

I dislike how the rule is written because it gives the ref too much room for subjective opinion.

Make it ejectable and reviewable and fix it

You have to ask yourself this:

If the roles were reversed, and Bama had a personal foul on a fumble return, would Gary talk about it the same way for 20 minutes that it was a blown call?
