Jacobs wasn't involved in 2003. And Gus was his man last time, Petrino was not or he'd have been hired then.

Petrino openly lobbied for the AU job in 2012. Went public in the media, telling Finebaum he wanted the job. JJ knew and still didn't hire him.
I doubt that changes unless JJ is given his walking papers (we can only hope).
