I binged watched CFB until late. I watched the Oregon and Arizona games when I noticed something. Their front 7 seemed to have the same philosophy as Mizzou. Don't penetrate, but try to keep the 5'8" track star RB's in front of you. Every RB had the same BIO, 5'8" and a 100 meter champ from California.

I can see how this is effective when playing against quick passing schemes and smaller, faster RBs, but not penetrating and letting bigger RBs run to you doesn't seem like a good scheme for SEC play. With the exception of Stanford and Utah, it seems like the PAC 12 has turned into an Offensive track meet and defense has taken a back seat.

We as fans of Mizzou have noticed a difference in Shipp's philosophy right away, and we're concerned (to put it nicely.) But after the offensive explosion last night, do you think we can survive SEC play with an high octane offense and good but not great defense?

My hope is that they haven't implemented the entire plan yet.

WVU is the type of offense we won't see much, so the gameplan probably wasn't the same as it would be for a UGA/LSU/UF type offense.

Last night looked like a straight 4 man rush, no stunts etc. They probably felt like they could get away with it. The effort was what concerned me, gotta make plays against the aforementioned team or you don't stand a chance.

We'll know everything we need to know on Saturday.

Is it Shipps philosophy? Or is it the philosophy of Cross the DC?

While Shipp was at both ASU and OU he had DLs that were good at creating pressure.

Patterson's TCU plan was unique. He has a defensive background but brought in a high octane offense to win games while he developed his defensive scheme. Over time his defenses became very good while the offense still scored alot.

Maybe that's the Mizzou plan.

There's a chance Cross is in over his head here.

He was the co-DC there. His OJT if you will.

So, he's never really been in this spot.

Like I said, next week tells us just about everything we need to know.

I like reading faces.

Cross looks like a guy with too much on his plate.

On the sidelines he looks confused and nervous and out of his element.

He looks like a grad assistant/position coach.

Barry better be holding his hand and firming his grip.

Yup, I think it's time for BO to get a little more involved on the defensive side. He's too good of a defensive coach for this to continue.

They tried to penetrate EMU. They just didn't. And they looked slow and lackadaisical about it

SEC Olines will run you over if you aren't moving forward as a DL. No DL can stand up to the Olines in the SEC just trying to "hold their ground."

Couple interesting tweets about last years defense if ASU, TCU, and Mizzou. From Gabe

quote:

Those blaming new coach/scheme for #Mizzou DL issues, Arizona State had more TFL for more yards than MU last year

quote:

TCU, where #Mizzou DC DeMontie Cross was last year, was 54th in country in TFL FWIW

quote:

Arizona State, Shipp’s DL, led the nation with 3.54 sacks/game last year. TCU was 35th with 2.46. #Mizzou was 43rd with 2.33.

After reading about the new philosophy, I can see why it is effective. The design when defensing the run is to force the RB to run sideways and to get your OLB and Safety to the corner to tackle. Safeties have to tackle in this defense. The challenge with facing smaller, quicker RB's is when they run between the tackles, you don't see them until they are at the second level. Making them run sideways makes it easier to read and react while negating their speed.

My question is in the SEC the backs are bigger and they run between the tackles. Will a defense designed to counter the wide open Big 12 offenses work against SEC offenses. Or can we buy time with a high scoring offense until Cross can develop a scheme to counter SEC offenses. Similar to how Patterson did it at TCU.

Mizzou has not played good defense thus far this season. It has to improve right away or we will be looking at a 4-8 season record.
