You're assuming that the bowl matchups would have been the same, which under the ild system wasn't the case.
Plus you forget that Saban's 2008 and 2014 teams finished the regular season ranked #1. Saban could have picked weaker Sugar Bowl opponents those years, just as Bryant did in '61 and '79.

As much as I love Bryant I've got to give it to Saban. Saban beats Bryant in 3 key areas: Recruiting, details, and change. Saban is willing to change to win. Bryant wasn't as amenable to change. He out recruited the competition and and out-motivated his players . Bryant molded great men physically and morally. Saban molds great men physically, morally and intellectually.
Saban got better with age. Bryant didn't.
