I don't disagree with anything you said, just speculating on why he might not get the start. As I said, I think they've already decided he's the guy for the long haul.

What's the practice schedule this week?

Bateman has what, 1 advantage over the other guys? He's older and I guess would make less mistakes?
I'm not so sure that's the case. He makes plenty of mistakes. Less than Barnett but from what I've seen him and Hurts are equal in that field.
So let's look at game experience, he came in for a bit against Wisconsin and we ran mostly I think he had one boot leg dump to OJ. Next week against chump he came in same deal. Que Ole Miss, 11/14 80 something yards one pick and wouldn't run the ball on the read at all. He looked and played totally scared. Coker wins the team and the rest is history. So he has a grand total of maybe 2 quarters of SEC ball under his belt. You can claim that he has been in the system longer but Hurts runs more plays than the other two so X that. You could also say he doesn't have the ability to run some of Hurts plays. Etc Etc.
So what is the real difference here. IMO it's the fact Hurts has a better arm, not up for debate. And he is faster and runs the read better. Make up your own mind.

I always say, if it's close just go with the younger guy. That's an overly simplistic way to go, but, it is what it is.

It might be a situation where Bateman is better at getting the call in, get them lined up quickly/correctly, checks, etc. at this point.
These things get glossed over at times but are extremely important.
Boz might be able to hopefully shed some light on this.

Wrench, just my .02, if the coaches have decided and they start prepping hurts now I think it will be OK in 2 weeks. Boz already has said he has snap on the ball which helps with a possible delay in his reads. He is a coaches kid, I am sure kiffin can make him get it.
This is what I am telling myself anyways

NS has shown over time that if it is close he goes with experience all day and all night. You can not buy experience. So if it is close then Batemen will start. Now will he keep it is the million dollar quesiton

What is this experience going to help him with?
Posted on 8/22/16 at 7:58 pm to Wrenchruh
Jalen has not struggled with that at all. I haven't seen a single botched play yet. When the lights come on it may be different. Hard to say.

I just don't see how Bateman has an upper hand here. This so called experience wasn't the best. But hey maybe Saban let's him have a shot to be the man. I dunno. I will know more as we get closer. I have a source that should be able to know the round table decision.

At this point, won't we be able to tell when practice starts again? It's freakin' crunch time.
Posted on 8/22/16 at 8:10 pm to ReauxlTide222
No, Saban will not show the media anything. He will make it 2 lines and keep it normal looking. I will rely on my player and staff folks to inform me of the real deal. Hopefully they will be able to shed light.

Thanks. That's impressive. I seem to remember Sims and Coker struggling with that at times.

What is the benefit of the SC coach announcing the starter?
If it's a battle, and the coaching staff knows the starter, seems like they would keep it under wraps, like we r doing.

Boz......I feel like you already might know a little something

Look, I'm not bashing Blake or Coker but how many times did we burn a time out because it looked like a 3 ring circus out there and they didn't have a clue what was going on? If Kiffen can coach is through that, Hurts should be no different and probably easier.

I'll be honest, there were times last year that I thought Coker was a little mentally "slow". I'm sure he isn't, but damn.

I think the issue is that Saban and Kiffin have to decide what kind of offense we want to be this year.
Do we want to simplify the O, and go with the talented youngster with wheels? Become essentially more run heavy, factoring in the QB running game, although as mentioned earlier the RPO plays provide an advantage and can be done by a young QB, given that it's really one read after the snap and Kiffin can make the pre-snap read. (Advantage Hurts - athleticism)
Or Do we want to be our more traditional run/pass balanced pro-style, with an effective run game and play action pass? Rely on our ability with personnel at |WR/TE/H to be so multiple that we're hard to prepare for, protect the QB, and just spread the ball to the playmakers based on what the D gives us? (Advantage Bateman - playbook knowledge)
We have to figure out what our identity is going to be, and I think Saban alluded to doing just that in his post scrimmage press conference a few days ago. Given the nastiness of our defense, I think turnovers are the only thing that will derail our championship plans. And so, the question is, which style will most consistently put up enough points to win while minimizing turnovers and negative plays? Tough call.
