Best states for concealed carry — ranked worst to first (I reversed the rankings for the sake of convenience.)

1. ARIZONA - As good as it gets: The Grand Canyon State was at the top in all categories, and issues permits to residents even though it doesn't require them.

2. UTAH

3. ALASKA

4. WYOMING

5. FLORIDA - The modern concealed carry movement started here, and its stand-your-ground laws are modeled across the nation.

11. KENTUCKY - One of the best states in the country for gun owners. For a concealed carry permit, training time is a little above the national average, and non-residents can't get permits.

12. TEXAS - No surprise the Lone Star State is great for concealed carry — but the fees may set you back more than in some neighboring states.

17. GEORGIA - Firmly pro-gun for its residents, the Peach State is edged by others in the upper echelon for its reciprocal record

18. ALABAMA - In the heart of the pro-gun South, Alabama is a shall-issue system run through county sheriffs who also set the fees individually.

20. MISSISSIPPI - The Magnolia State is great in terms of training time, reciprocity and self-defense laws. But there are numerous locations where carry is banned, such as churches.

23. TENNESSEE - This pro-gun state narrowly misses the Top 20 primarily because only full-time residents can obtain permits, and the fees are above average.

25. MISSOURI - The shall-issue carry state has strong self-defense laws and average fees, but there are a slew of locales in-state where carry is banned.

26. SOUTH CAROLINA - Strong self-defense laws and minimal fees are a plus, but the Palmetto State doesn't recognize permits from many other states.

34. LOUISIANA - High marks for strong stand-your-ground statutes, but fees are considerably higher than average. Also, no guns around alcohol or parades.

37. ARKANSAS - No comment was given.
