Then the #1 team going into the NC game that year - Ohio State, must have been really pedestrian I guess ???

We really were. Todd Boeckman was not anywhere near a the caliber QB needed for a BCSNC team. We lost to Illinois and were ranked 11th with I believe 2-3 weeks before the selection. Somehow every single team ranked ahead of us lost, pushing us back to #1. Still can't believe how that season ended.
