What makes it smart is paying off the family more than the kid. That has three benefits:
1. Kid doesn't flaunt money as much, which brings attention
2. Mom motivates kid to stay in program, which has a better ROI than a NSD signing bonus
3. Family members are not beholden to NCAA, which is a huge loophole
