What I take from this is that the Sweet 16 has not been kind to the Vols historically.
Posted on 3/10/16 at 8:04 am to Ericvol2096
Not just TN, but Missouri as well...they have 7 appearances, but had one vacated.
Posted on 3/10/16 at 8:06 am to Hawgeye
Alabama has 8 and 1 vacated. 1 Elite Eight. 0 Final Fours.

Same for Bama.
7 Sweet Sixteens, only 1 Elite 8. 1-6

Just a note for those wondering. Arkansas is 6-4 in sweet sixteen games.. but we have 4 elite 8 appearances from the NCAA tournament before there was a sweet 16.

So Arkansas is 10-0 in the Sweet Sixteen? Nice.
Kentucky is 36-5 in the Sweet Sixteen
Florida 8-1 in the Sweet Sixteen
Impressive.
ETA: Just saw the note above that Arkansas is only 6-4 in the Sweet 16. I take back my compliment.

No. Arkansas is 6-4 in the Sweet Sixteen. Arkansas made Elite Eights prior to the current format in 1941, 1945, and 1949.
This will also make any school that has been to Elite Eights prior to the current format have a different record than what the numbers actually suggest.

Dam, it's just mind boggling to look at UK and what they've done in bball. I think they have more SEC tourney championships that the rest of the SEC combined.

We had some unlucky/upset sweet 16s too.
1976 - lost by 5 to National Champ undefeated Indiana, their closest game of the tournament
1982 - lost by 5 to National Champion North Carolina
1987 - lost to Billy Donovan and Rick Pitino's Providence
2004 E8 - lost to National Champion UConn

Another big reason UK has so many more appearances is nobody else could go to the NCAAT other than conference champs until 1975.
All 20 of Alabama's NCAAT appearances are since 1975. If Arky and Missouri had Kentucky in their league they'd have a bunch less too.

For LSU to be tied for 20th in final four appearances, we really should dump more money into the basketball program and go out and find a good coach. The fans want to care about basketball, but have trouble getting behind it after another disappointing season.

Alabama went 21-3 overall and 14-0 in conference and finished ranked 5th in 1956. No NCAA Tournament.
Alabama went 18-8 overall and 13-5 in the SEC in 1972. No NCAA Tournament.
Alabama went 22-8 overall and 13-5 in the SEC in 1973. No NCAA Tournament.
Alabama went 22-4 overall and 15-3 in the SEC in 1974. Finished ranked 14th. No NCAA Tournament.
A 3 year period of going 62-20 overall and 41-13 in league play and zero NCAA Tournaments shows what they were dealing with.

Yea. Arkansas had 5 NCAA invitations prior to 1977. So, 26 since 1977.
Arkansas had 2 Final Fours, 3 Elite Eights prior to 1977.
Many people view Indiana as a historical basketball power, but they've only been to 8 Final Fours all time(just above Arkansas), 6 of those in the new era of basketball, and only won 1,784 games all time.

Or maybe Kentucky would have less? There is two sides to every coin.
Arkansas only had 5 invites prior to 1977. Arkansas is 18th all time in NCAA Tourney wins.
Missouri only had 1 invite prior to 1976.

A few, maybe, but Kentucky was Kentucky.

And Arkansas was Arkansas.
Kentucky didn't have much, if any, competition on the SEC in basketball from the 1940's until the late 1980's or early 90's.
Arkansas did have to deal with Texas in the SWC, who also won the league 19 times while Arkansas was a part of it. Texas was crowned the 1933 National Champions and went to two Final Fours in the 40's. Then you had the emergence of Houston and Phi Slamma Jamma.
The SWC wasn't a bad basketball league. Arkansas did win 22 Conference Titles, but the program had competition within the league itself.

State wasn't allowed to compete against schools with black players for a long time when they had teams that were good enough to do so.
In fact, State won 4 out of 5 SEC regular season championships in the early 60s and couldn't go to the tournament. There's a great potential 30 for 30 on the time that the coach and president of the university basically told the governor he could frick himself and snuck out of town.
