Just wanted to get you guys thoughts on the podcast discussion about concussions and football.
Neal McCready seems to be of the opinion that middle to upper middle class parents are not allowing kids to play football. He mentions his son and how he doesn't play when as a kid all the kids in his neighborhood would have played.
Personally I don't agree with him. I think kids these days just have more exciting things to do than playing football like we used to. As far as soccer, I don't think the draw is concussions because people get concussions there as well. Its just a fact world wide it is a popular sport and certain areas of the US are just now catching up. My son who is 5 just plays whatever.
Thoughts.

I don't think class is too much of an issue regarding whether the kid wants to play, at least in the South. Schools like MUS, JA, JP, etc. are all predominantly upper-middle to upper class predominantly white schools, and they all have decent football programs where if the kid is big enough to play (and even oftentimes if he's not), he plays if he wants to.

And no offense to his son, but maybe he would be better in the band! Lol

Harrison Barnes was in the band.

Regarding the OP
I do agree with him that football has a huge safety issue that will plague it in the future if it isn't addressed more seriously and creatively. I disagree with him that parents en mass are going to stop their kids from playing football all together though. Especially here in the south. I think some parents will begin to lean toward the middle of the argument like my parents and not forbid playing but rather discourage it.

I played football through middle and highschool. I know I for sure got at least 2 concussions. I hit a big as QB in the hole once and got up and tried going to their huddle after the play
As far as parents letting kids play I know this for sure. If it was 100% up to my wife my son will never play football. The thought of injury scares her to death. But my boy ain't gonna be a baby backed BITCH and he will play. Haha (if he wants to of course)

I'll be honest. I played in 7-9 grades and hated every second of it. Getting hit sucks.

Let the kids play if they want. I don't have kids but when I do I'll let them play if they want. Are you going to stop your kids from riding four wheelers and dirt bikes? Those are 10 times more dangerous than contact sports yet parents don't bat an eye when kids rip through the deer camp on one of those.

A "DOBs" accurate statement. I have personally seen 100x more kids either die or suffer injuries resulting in severe neural deficits due to 4 wheeler accidents. Believe it or not but throw in golf carts also.

Had a childhood friend die on a 4 wheeler, had one of my coaches daughters die on a golf cart (She was very young). Sad stuff

I'm 6'1" and my wife is 5'-0". My daughter is growing up tall, but my son will be small in stature, like his mother. We're gonna focus on grades and girls. Leave the contact sports to someone else.
