1977-1980 James Brooks

AU: 621 attempts, 3523 yds, 5.7 ypc, 24 TD’s.
1980 All-SEC First Team

I was freshman in high school when Brooks was a senior. Best high school back the I've ever personally watched play ball. He could've broken numerous high school records had he gotten many carries and not shared the backfield with another SEC RB (James Womack, UGA). He had a couple games where he'd rush once or twice for 75 or 90 yards and a TD and then he'd sit out the rest of the game. Several other games where he'd have less than 10 carries and have 150 to 200 yards...dude could flat out run. Think he'd have put up awesome numbers at AU if he hadn't been behind Cribbs for a couple of years...

True, albeit secondhand, story: the year before Brooks was starting RB at WRHS, we got beat something like 27-0 by Columbus; their coach called time out at the end of the game to run up the score. Next year, we were up 49-6 over that same Columbus team and the seniors called timeout right before our last play. They went over to the coach and he said something like, "Payback time...we'll try a long pass." The seniors said, "No coach, we want to toss sweep it to James..." and the coach said OK. They pitched it to Brooks and he ran untouched 50+ yards for a TD...
