Beat on the field by the other co-champion...yet still insist they were the national champions.

Sorry, but back then trophies were awarded prior to bowl games.

Well UPI named them as the national champion, cannot blame them for that. Blame UPI if someone needs to be blamed. Then again, Coach Bryant could have taken the easier road and played in the Orange Bowl, but instead chose to take on #3 Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl.
