No one has started a thread on this yet so far this year, so I'll give it a try...

1699: first Mardi Gras celebration in Louisiana
1711: first Mardi Gras parade in Alabama

Verdict: I have to give both states a tie here...I guess the winning state depends on if you feel Mardi Gras can be celebrated with or without a parade

(besides, neither could've "invented" Mardi Gras any way, as it goes back like 2,000 years).

Happy Mardi Gras, folks, and good night to all.

In 1711, Mobile was still part of the Louisiana territory.

Alabama territory did not form until 1817

I'm from Mobile, and spend every Mardi Gras now in NOLA.

Mobile's claim is the modern Mardi Gras. Comus took inspiration from a now defunct parade in Mobile. Its not the interesting part though, it's experiencing the different iterations from the French part of the South.

Who invented Mardi Gras? The Romans of course.
