He's Mark Gottfried in Gottfried's best years. NBA talent, 10 cent coAching, wins over top 5 teams and losses on the road to teams that finish 17-15. You just hope the talented kids are in a groove when the tournament rolls around (Bama circa 2004).

Better than being a bad recruiter and a decent coach any day of the week.

good comparison, both could recruit but can't coach a lick.

that's been my thing all season.

Nowadays, in-game coaching isn't that big of a deal in college basketball. Scott Drew is an awful, awful in-game coach, and he's taken two teams to the Elite Eight.

Johnny is a good recruiter, his players really like him, he seems to do a decent job motivating his players, he's gotten interest back to the program, he does a good job of getting guys to improve and understand their roles as the season progresses (see: Blakeney).

He's not a good in-game coach. We get it. Luckily, he's surrounded himself with enough talent, and gets enough effort out of his guys to offset that some.
