Perhaps it was because America successfully rebelled against the rule of England, a religious state at the time, that so many people assume that the founding fathers were Christians and, therefore, bound to model our country after the country from which they came.

However, more logical is the certainty that they wanted no more of the repression that a state religion subjects a citizenry to and so they built in guarantees that the tyranny of a philosophy can never take hold in America.
