Up until their title year in 2005 Mack Brown had never won a conference title either. It took him 22 years as a HC and when he finally did they won the whole damn thing.

So to act like b/c Sumlin hasn't done it yet means he likely never will is pretty stupid.

Acting like Mack - who is the exception - is the rule is pretty stupid. Mack is an outlier. Going by the past 20 years of Natties, coaches who are capable of doing it have already done it or are WELL on their way by the point we are with Sumlin. Instead, Sumlin's following up an 8-win season in which we got dogstomped by our division's major players with an abomination of a recruiting class relative to what we need to compete in this conference.

There is no rule.

Nick Saban didn't win a conference title outright (or have a 10 win season) until his 8th year as a HC. His single year at Toldeo he did tie for the MAC conference title w/Central Michigan. The MAC had no conference title games then but Toldeo lost head to head vs Central Michigan in a de facto MAC title game and wasn't invited to a bowl. At Mich St he went 6-5-1, 6-6, 7-4, 6-6, 9-2. At LSU he went 8-4 year one and finally won a conference title outright at 10-3. He followed that with 8-5. Does anything there really indicate that Saban was about to go on an all time great run as a college HC?
