A partial list of land-grant colleges started before the main state university in order to secure federal funding:

Oregon Beavers (no, that doesn't sound right, eh? Oregon State older than Univ. of Oregon)

Kansas Wildcats (Jayhawks, you say? Same story)

Colorado Rams (wait, aren't they the Buffaloes? Colo St older than Boulder campus)

Oklahoma Cowboys (Sooners? Just by a few weeks)

New Mexico... Aggies? Wait, I thought they were the Lobos.

You don't hear these teams running around claiming to be "The University of," so why do Texas A&M aggies do this?

How many of those aforementioned schools have their own separate university system?

Here's a list of other Land Grant Schools:

University of Florida
University of Georgia
University of Missouri
Louisiana State University
University of Arkansas
University of Tennessee
University of Kentucky
Mississippi State University

Add A&M and that makes 9 of the 14 SEC members who are land grant schools.
