Augustus actually went out of his way to create the illusion that the Republic still existed as it always had. Imperator was a military title at the time. The Romans had a thing for killing kings and dictators so he made sure to put it out there that he was just "First Citizen" or Princeps in Latin (or Prince in today's English).

Of course, he did promote the idea that Julius Caesar and added divi filius to all the coins (son of the divine). So that helped I'm sure.
