Not 100% on college rule, but pretty sure it's the same across the board. If the ball is in the air and hasn't touched a return man or hit the ground then it's kick-catch-interference. The return team is always allowed a chance to catch the ball while in the air even if no one is around. That's why the kicker tries to bounce it into the air then it's anyone's ball.

Tigerman gets it. You can't just smear the potential returner anymore. Those guys were always coming up injured. The old way to get an onside side was to:
1. Kick at player on receiving team
2. Send fast, mean LB at player
3. Destroy player
4. Get ball 10 yards
5. Recover ball
Unfortunately the receiver is rendered sterile by the abusive hit before the ball even arrives. Now you have to give that player a change to catch it before you destroy him, saving the lives of the poor bastards on the "hands team."
In the 2014 SC play they smear the SC player right as the ball touches the "returners" hands. The returner can't hold on, and the ball is recovered by Clemson. The Champ game play in no way looks like that play. Dabo is woefully confused. His argument would be the same as claiming Eddie Jackson should have been called for pass interference on his interception because he didn't give the WR a chance to catch the ball. Eddie didn't plow the reciever, he caught the ball before it made it to the reciever. We call that an interception instead of pass interference. FB lesson over

They try to bounce it so that they can't call a fair catch. If there's no one there to catch the ball, then you don't have to worry about that.

The rule for KCI requires a player from the receiving team to be in position to make the catch. Rule 6-4-1:
A player of the receiving team within the boundary lines attempting to catch a kick, and so located that he could have caught a free kick or a scrimmage kick that is beyond the neutral zone, must be given an unimpeded opportunity to catch the kick.
It would be hard to interpret any Clemson player to be so located.
