I cross the river to Delta LA to save a few bucks on booze once a week, and the Chevron station/liquor store consistently has a very sad collection of humans. Over 100 are lined up to buy their tickets. Walkers are prevalent. Full sets of teeth are not. The store hires off-duty cops to direct traffic in their parking lot. Even if I wasn't predisposed to stay away from lotteries, that scene would be enough to wake me up and turn me off.
Yeah I know somebody has to win eventually, but I'm certain almost all of the buyers have no idea what the odds are. Or rather, they might, but numbers that large are meaningless to them.
ETA: Oh, I'm in.

I mean, I paid $10 for the ticket, and will roll my winnings today into the next drawing. It's my only shot of ever seeing $500 million, so why not? Because I'd be down $10?

I saw this factoid some years back, "23% of American workers are counting on winning the lottery in order to retire."
We need population control. The more people there are, the more stupid people there are.
