I was just there recently in Berlin and Hamburg. In terms of violent crime it is exponentially safer than the US. Aside from anti-Muslim sentiment, there's basically no cause for supporting the Far Right. The economy is strong and most people are content. There is a strong commitment to centrism in Germany. Their entire school curriculum basically focuses on why they should be ashamed to be German due to the Nazi past and how important it is not to support the Far Right. In fact, I'd say they go way too far with these measures, to the point where they are curtailing civil liberties to prevent anyone from admiring the Nazis. Anyone suggesting there will be a Fourth Reich is just totally uninformed about modern Germany or an alarmist. The US is much more supportive of the Far Right than Germany.

I have relatives over there that I talk to at least twice a week, and they tell me how bad it's getting. When your kids and females are scared to go outside its a problem. None of them support Nazis, but they are proud of their country and the far right is starting to sound much better than the left. Houses that host refugees are being burnt down and there are far right vigilante groups that are starting to self police.

We have a soft form of that going on here right now only the "centrist" position is slowly being pulled to the left over time so that what was centrist 20 years ago is no longer the center.
