When you have a head coach with an offensive background who puts complete trust in his DC? Plenty of head coaches let the coordinator on the other side of the ball set their own recruiting board.

Ultimately, Miles should have stepped in and put his foot down about Brick, even if Chavis had stayed. I'll give you that. Too much trust and complacency are a bad combo.

So what can we conclude from this? LSU has run a 4-3 defense since Miles arrived in 2005. A typical 4-3 defense needs 6-8 scholarship linebackers on the roster per season. Assuming that each recruit stays for 3.5 years, that would require you to sign an average of two per year (ideally three to account for busts). During Chavis's time at LSU we average 2.33 linebackers per year. Without Chavis, LSU averages 2 linebackers per year. Not much of a difference. Did Chavis get lazy before he burned bridges and left? Maybe.
