For some perspective....
LSU's defense is currently ranked 10th in nation...
... and that's pretty impressive considering their offense is ranked 50th.
I'd not say Kevin Steele is the second coming of Mike Ditka or anything. But coaching a defense to a top ten finish is not exactly sucking either.

Terrible vs good competition in November.

You're using total yards for a team that has played one less game than almost everyone in the country. If that's how you want to look at it, more power to you.

Lsu is 27th in total defense... LINK

A couple of counter points.
1) LSU has top 10 (really probably top 5) defensive talent.
2) There's a residual effect. LSU is 1 year removed from Chavis. The further away they get from him, the more they will regress. Let's look at Clemson in terms of total defense rank when Steele was DC and after he left.
2009 - 13th
2010 - 18th
2011 - 100th - Fired
2012 - 74th
2013 - 29th
2014 - 1st
If Gus hires him as AU's DC, they will be in a coaching search this time next season.

That's in total yards allowed for the season, while playing fewer games, and not counting the bowl game. In YPG, it's 23rd or so, I think. Considering how many 9th string walkon QBs we faced this year, not to mention the dumpster fire that is the Texas A&M offense, that's not too hot.

Again, that's total yards for the season while playing fewer games, and not counting the bowl game. YPG is around 33rd or so.
Given that we play in a conference with good defenses and not much offense, and we played fewer games, your rankings based on season totals don't mean much.
