Would be interested to hear your thoughts and impressions of your former OC Jim Chaney.

So far in Georgia, people are more excited about the Pittman hire than Chaney....and even speculating that part of the reason for hiring Chaney was to get Pittman.

Also...why did Chaney leave Arkansas for the same job at Pitt? That raises some flags..

Not sure what to think of this hire yet.

You're not going to hear many nice things said about Chaney from our fanbase. Folks didn't like him when he was here because the offense was so stagnant and disjointed and then it got even worse when Enos came in and killed it with basically the same players.

Also, Chaney was essentially fired. He wasn't coming back this year whether he took the Pitt job or not. He just got another job before it became official.

Chaney was not going to be retained. Bert gave him the opportunity to seek other employment instead of firing him.

We all absolutely hated Chaney.

I remember starting threads and wanting him fired half way into his first season here.

He scored less than 40 points in the fourth quarter of 16 SEC games here. IMO he was a large reason we had a 17 game league losing streak. In 2014 Arkansas led or was tied at halftime with Auburn, aTm, Alabama, Miss State, and Mizzou. In all of those games, Chaney could not score one single point in the fourth quarter to win the game.

The first halves would start great. Power run, tons of yards....then he goes to running go routes and passing for no apparent reason. Even a TE reverse on the goal line(who does that?).

Bret even made a comment in our opening game this season...something to the effect of..."Isn't it good to have a play caller who knows when to call a pass and knows when to run"

you guys hired chaney for Pittman.

Pittman is the best oline coach and recruiter in the country.

you should be very worried about your QB's with chaney. he had nothing to do with drew brees. he doesn't change QB's mechanics. he said "if they are good enough to be a D1 player they must be doing something right" so unless you get a dedicated qb coach do not expect any improvement. he makes bone headed calls. he is great at o line blocking schemes against opponents(he was a nose tackle so this is no suprise). that is all he is good at.

I'm laughing that you guys had to take chaney to get pittman, but I am super pissed about losing Pittman. congrats on your 5 star OT Garrett bolles.

Smart hired Chaney to get Pittman. You'll fire Chaney in a couple years and keep Pittman.

Also, if the press box elevator isn't working he isn't coming down for halftime adjustments.

Georgia fans will not be happy with Chaney running the offense.

Chaney is a terrible in game play caller. He is alright in the first quarter when he is following a prepared script. When the script is over and he has to rely on adjustments and reading the defense is when the wheels come off.

I think he is a good offensive mind if you sit down and talk X's and O's but when the pads are popping he's fricking worthless.

Here's a thread I made in 2013. One of many similar ones that were made.

And we went through a whole other year of him after that.

I think you just have to wait and see. Pretty much everyone post-Petrino gets a pass for obvious reasons. It's difficult for even the best to do great work in bad conditions.

Thanks to those providing the insight.

About what I feared. But still, I'm starting to come around to this thing.

I realize the east is a disaster, but we won 9 games this year with Brian fricking Squattin'heimer calling plays.... and with Virginia's second string QB behind a below average OL. So, as long as Chaney is at least half-way competent, and with Pittman on board, i think we'll be alright.

Hopefully, as someone said, Chaney won't be given QB coaching duties.......and Smart maybe has something up his sleeve with a QBs coach hire. What with wonderboy coming in and all.

Still trying to wrap my head around the idea of Smart hiring Chaney to get Pittman though...

I mean, I believe it. But what's the connection there between the two?

The allegations are they were very "cozy" in the past according to a couple of other threads on this board.
