This is why i've always like 6 better than 8. By building in the Bye, you're adding even more importance to the regular season. You want to do well enough to not only get in the playoff, but to also get the bye.

But the problem is, in a year like this, if we had 5 1 loss conference champs, who the hell gets the byes? MSU and Clemson have the best resumes (assuming MSU wins), but Bama passes the eye test as does OU and Stanford (hypothetical 1 loss).

To me, you need to change the entire system to have 4 or 8 total conferences with champs getting in. I know in some years that leaves out really good teams (like OSU this year). I would however have regional semifinals and finals, so if you lose a tough game in October, but are still one of the best 2/4 teams in your division/conference you get into the regional games, with a chance to make the playoff.

I have a 16 team playoff with either 2 teams playing in 8 conferences or 4 teams playing in 4 conferences, with "regional" winners meeting in the national playoff
