From the snippets.. .it seems the first officer escalated the situation and didn't keep his composure very well.
Once the magical words, you're under arrest, came out though, the student should have complied. That isn't the time or place to argue anymore and he would have had a chance to make his case in court.

him leaping into the house is the biggest reason in escalated to what it did. If the other cops get there before he starts bashing heads, none if this is likely to happen. When he jumps into the doorway he gave the other officers no other option. Even if he is cleared of everything he should be fired for sucking at his job.

I don't think its ridiculous to ask why you are getting pulled out of your house at 3am
