He had his network of bag men like AIDS victim Roy Adams in Memphis established and was too old, too fat, and too lazy to build another one.

This. He was noted as being moderately interested in quite a few jobs in the SEC but he wasn't invested in any of them. He had been to the mountain top so to speak and now he was ready to settle into a long retirement.
Could he have gone on to coach quite a few programs in the SEC that would have thrived with him as head coach? Yes.
But I think when he was let go from his dream job with the Vols he decided to just hang it up. He stuck his toes in the water but he never was really interested in anything.
