Dude got some criticism from the powers that be and quit in an immature huff.
That was my guess the second I heard about his sudden retirement and nothing I've heard since has changed my mind.
Great coach - but he's always been a brat.

Yep, that's my thoughts as well. Ray Tanner was a bad arse coach and wanted to know what he was going to do to right the ship. Spurruer didn't like the criticism, didn't want to continue to get losses on his record, and bailed on his team. I can guarantee he has told the team to keep fighting, don't quit and all that type of coach speak all season and then completely does a 180 and quits himself because he can't take the heat. He was a great coach but now his legacy will be of a quitter when times were at their worst. Great message to those players he recruited, not to mention the current natural dissaster in the area, he should have been a leader and buckled down and finished the season.
