LSU has been very hospitable.

True however if they tried to demand home uniform choice they would have looked like massive dicks.

The backstory is that from 1983-1994 the NCAA had a rule mandating that the home team wear dark colored jerseys and the road team light colored ones. This didn't affect most teams as it was mostly done that way anyway, but there were a small handful of schools that traditionally wore white at home (LSU being one of them).

The NCAA changed the rule in 1995 to allow the home team to wear what they wanted if the visiting team gave permission. The SEC took it a step farther in 1997, giving the home team choice of uniforms and the visiting team being required to wear the opposite.

directly because of Gerry Dinardo's lobbying efforts.

Spurrier, the needler that he is/was, started requesting to wear white when LSU came to the Swamp. LSU choosing to wear purple is a direct nod to those days and to the fact this is very likely the last time LSU will face a Spurrier coached team.

1999. Spurrier pouted that LSU fans had been mean to them after the 1997 game. Spurrier said no to white, LSU said he was a jerk, Kramer stepped in and said home team calls it.

I don't think this was an option since USC is the home team and therefore got to make the call.
