The Longhorns had alot invested in Garrett Gilbert. He was the only QB they took that year, and I don't think they took one the year they lost to Alabama. They thought they were set at that position.

When he then left after the following year, they really had nothing at QB. And they have been hurting at that position since then until maybe this year with Heard. With their bad offensive line, it's kind of hard to tell what Heard can or can't do.

Gilbert not panning out really hurt them.

Assuming at least SOME of the Saban to Texas talks happened, which by most accounts it did to some degree, I'm sure it's not lost on them that Bama kinda fricked them over a 2nd time too. A majority of Longhorn fans thought it would automatically happen since they're the "mighty" Texas and that's how they roll, and it made them infinitely butthurt that it didn't. Strong was doomed from the start because he's not Saban, and that's all they wanted.
