We've apparently contacted Blake Barnett, former Bama QB

Is that necessarily a good idea?

It would produce a wonky problem - he'd be eligible next year, but not until the 28th of Sept, the official filing date of his transfer paperwork.

I personally don't think so if that counts for anything

Sounds like we're getting some inside info before our big game.

Yeah you'd basically have to prep all offseason with Barnett as QB1, start Hubes for the first few games, then ditch the poor guy (hey, at least you got to play) to put Barnett in once he was eligible.

I dunno. If Mond doesn't care I'm fine with getting whoever the staff likes more between Stidham or Barnett. But I think Mond is going to be really legit in this offense. The comments from him this weekend where he said they run the exact same offense at IMG and their OC worked for Mazzone put it over the top (and explained a lot about the Martell/Mond situation). I do not want to lose him

Mazzone had zero contact with Barnett btw. There's zero interest by A&M.

Not that Hamm is right all the time but this is what he just said. The report came from one of the national 247 writers.

That seems more likely to me.

I agree, Mond is the future. But he may not be ready as a freshman, and we need to be able to account for that.

We are going to have senior talent all over the place next year, similar to this year, and we need a QB who can win games. I don't want to avoid putting ourselves in the best position to win next year just to keep the QB who will lead the team for the 3 years after that.

I'm not entirely sure we have a legit QB next year is all I'm saying.

I don't think we do. Not saying Barnett is one though.

But the only way to salvage what may be a tragically bad season next year is to have a QB that can win games himself, the way that Dak did for MSU.

If there was someone available like Knight who was a senior I think it would be an easier situation to manage. The fact there would be a heavy overlap between Mond and Stidham or Barnett makes it complicated

Tragically bad is a pretty strong statement. Our interior line and star RB are all freshmen and sophomores, and we have the best run game in the SEC. That will go a very long way.

Don't pre-melt too hard there feller, the staff is very high on Starkel. I'm just not ready to go all-in on him as I suspect many fans aren't as well.

Yes that would be a nice situation but not likely, given how unique it was.

Pretty much.

Knight is the perfect scenario. The guy can QB your team competently for one season and everyone knows he's just there for one year, so QB recruiting takes 0 hit from it. But throw in a guy with 4 years left and it changes the calculus of getting a current-year top QB recruit, because that heavily impacts when or even if he'll play. Yes, Leach had a string of top-performers who waited until they were seniors, but those guys were not highly recruited and didn't go anywhere after college -they were willing to wait because they knew that was as good as it was going to get for them.

On offense. But we lose our bookend All-American DEs and skull-shatteringly good defensive backfield.

Our qb room next year will likely consist of Stidham, Starkel & Mond. I can live with that

We will have a good defense next year. We will have improved CB play, our backup safeties are very talented, we still have D Wilson, we retain all of our major contributors at DT, the staff has shown a ton of confidence in our backup DEs and guys like Lockhart will become major contributors, and our linebackers could be better than they have ever been.

We may not have all americans at DE, but we have potential to have the most complete defense we have had in awhile next year. Do not melt, for next year you will forever be un-rustled

Yeah IF we get Stidham, I'd be thrilled with that room! But I don't think we can say that's likely right now. It's just rumor an conjecture right now. I think it's more likely he follows Briles, wherever he lands.
