I like you, but I have to totally disagree with this post.

Strong is not a program builder, was not a good hire, is completely out of his depth, and is borderline mentally challenged. He can't even verbally compose a coherent English sentence. The guy is real, real dumb. That's why he got passed over for so many jobs. He bombed the interviews. It wasn't racism, as he claims. It's that he came in for interviews and AD after AD thought to themselves: "Would I even let him paint my house? Maybe not."

Unfortunately, this is not a slow burn.

Houston radio is ALIVE today with Longhorn callers who are "giving up" on Charlie. It's happening fast. I was hoping he'd follow the Fran Plan and get 7 wins this year only to bomb next year.

I wish the cooler heads would prevail as well and let Charlie have his five years (a coach taking over a troubled program really needs this much time, and Year 2 is usually the worst since the coach is just starting to recruit his players while purging the team of those from the former coach he doesn't want or who don't want to stay).

Five years of this and the next coach would need at least 10 to undo the damage. Maybe longer if OU finds a way into the SEC (which its fans want and maybe some of its BMD's do as well).

It was a bad mix from the get go. Strong is in so far over his head at texas that it is almost impossible for him to survive another year of ineptitude on the field. Going to take Patterson down with him. Strong looks very bad when having to think on his feet. He looks dumbstruck on the sideline. Just a blank stare.

One of the knocks on him was the HC at texas needed to be media savvy and needed to come across well on camera and he was horrible at this before they hired him. Just not very personable. That might be okay as a position coach but not as the HC... especially there and definitely not there with LHN over his shoulder or the donors there. As a reminder here is an ESPN writer from June last year at coaches clinic in San Angelo:

Some highlights if you don't want to bother reading it:

quote:

Charlie Strong's first impression with Texas high school coaches may not have exactly lived up to his last name.

"I think everyone was shocked. It was that bad," one coach told Haney.

Another said, "He obviously didn't want to be here. If he did, he sure as [heck] didn't show it."

The 53-year-old Strong has long had a reputation of being something of an introvert, and not all that interested in the more political aspects of a Division I head football coach's job.

If he can't sell Texas High School coaches and players on himself, he is doomed for failure.

Just my opinion but I think the fact that A&M left texas behind and they no longer have a game with us has hurt their recruiting and brand more than they want to admit. They only have 1 true marquee game now... OU. If texas is 7-4 and OU is 7-4... people will watch it. It texas is 7-4 and Baylor is 7-4... ratings go in the toilet. That's what I mean by marquee. On top of everything else going wrong at texas... he is having to deal with the subtle repercussions of A&M going to the SEC. In my personal opinion this is factoring in much more than they ever dreamed and is making a bad marriage even worse. They need a big personality to come in and shine a light back on that program from a PR standpoint.

you could be right. i'm not an expert on the guy. maybe the things he stands for skew my opinion.

he's been an excellent DC and while bridgewater had the world to do with his success at louisville, not all coaches take advantage of talent.

i can't see any scenario short of him going 3-9 where he doesn't come back to austin next year.

that said, i hope the horns wallow in failure and mediocrity for all eternity. was just trying to be objective about strong as a coach, not necessarily how bad i want the horns to be.
