2. Defensive Backs Stepping Up
We talked about the defensive backs yesterday but they made even bigger strides today. Cornerback Jared Collins was everywhere – breaking up passes one moment and blowing up screens the next. He tied for the SEC lead last season with 13 pass breakups and looks primed to increase his total in 2015.
DJ Dean is also continuing his solid play. He’s clearly one of the most athletic defensive backs in the conference and shows his athleticism on a regular basis in 7-on-7 and team drills.
It’s a good thing the pads weren’t on today because Santos Ramirez may have hurt somebody. He is such a physical player and made a break on a pass today that would have resulted in a lot of pain on the receiver. Fortunately, Ramirez was heady enough to pull off so teammates don’t get injured.
3. What Question Marks At Linebacker?
A lot has been made this offseason about the question marks at linebacker and understandably so, with Brooks Ellis moving to a new position and two new starters replacing Martrell Spaight and Braylon Mitchell. But after two days, there doesn’t appear to be as many question marks as people think.
Khalia Hackett is the new starter at Mike (middle) linebacker and he has been stellar. He made such a great read shooting the gap on a run play today that his new position coach, Vernon Hargreaves, got on his knees and bowed down in approval. A former high school safety, Hackett is also athletic enough to cover receivers in space and looks like he may be a three-down option for the Razorbacks.
:fap:
but the thing that stands out to me is our offense and defense seem to be getting equal praise, it's not just one sided. figured our offense would be getting more of the praise at this point. hopefully that's a good sign for our defense not missing a step after losing the players we did.
also for some reason I don't see randy shannon ever bowing to a linebacker that just made a great play . I'm sure the linebackers love to see that enthusiasm from hargreaves.

We brought Hargreaves on a couple years late.
VH3 would've made the last couple seasons a little easier to take.

Mike Irwin really slammed our backup QB's today after watching a few minutes of our first practice.
Was wondering what Coach Enos is going to do if BA goes down since there would be a huge drop off in ability according to Mike.
On the bright side, I'm not sure I trust the opinion of a 60 year old man that dyes his hair....

Any and all coaching the backups get from Enos this camp and season will be more QB coaching than they got all last year with Chaney.
Surely they will be able to hand the ball off if it comes to that in the season.

He got all of that from watching them lob passes against air for five minutes.

SOAB:
Newcomers making impact.
By Otis:
It isn't taking very long for some newcomers to make a quick impact at Arkansas' football practices. After only two practices, some names are starting to emerge as playmakers.
Junior cornerback Jared Collins heaped a lot of praise on cornerback Ryan Pulley on Friday. Pulley was heavily recruited by Robb Smith out of Fort Myers (Fla.) Island Coast High School. He chose the Hogs over Michigan State, Indiana, Arizona and Louisville among others. Florida State made a run at him in the end, but by then he was all Hog.
"Pulley is really good," Collins said. "I think he's really advanced for being a freshman. He's really patient. He has good feet and breaks. He plays the ball very well and is very physical. He likes to get physical with receivers and disrupt them."
Collins also had some praise for safety Willie Sykes, who was signed by Clay Jennings from Houston (Texas) Spring.
"I feel he's really developed for a freshman," Collins said of Sykes. "I think he can help us this year."
Another newcomer who has drawn consistent praise is Coffeyville (Kan.) Community College wide receiver Dominique Reed. Collins was asked who was faster Reed or Eric Hawkins?
"I don't know I would like to see that (race)," Collns said. "I covered him [Friday], he's a speedster. He can run the field really well and has good hands."
Quarterback Brandon Allen had high praise for Reed on Thursday. Senior wide receiver Keon Hatcher is working with Reed trying to help him speed-up the learning process with the playbook.
JaMichael Winston is a junior defensive end. The player who has caught his eye is another defensive end. Junction City (Ark.) true freshman Jamario Bell is using his 253-pound frame and freak athleticism to try to get early playing time.
"That guy, he's a freak of nature," Winston said. "I was telling (Jeremiah) Ledbetter the other day, he led the drills and the runs in the summer time. He's so fast."
Winston said Bell is a great pass rusher, and maybe too great at times he joked.
"He's just been out there getting after the quarterback," Winston said. "I had to yell at him today to stay away from the quarterback when he got his reps in, because he was about to reach out there and grab him."
Bell was a 4-star recruit with 247Sports and the 247Composite. He played both defensive end and tight end for his high school team. He also was a standout on the hardcourt. His defense at Junction shut out six of the 13 opponents in 2014 in an undefeated season.
No doubt more will emerge as practices continue. The Hogs practice today at 2:30 p.m. CT in a practice that is open to the media.

Bielema: I think there are going to be a lot of newcomers who play. Lot of talented players who are going to be hard to keep of the field.

From Twitter:

"I think there is a lot of guys who won't red shirt"
"DuWop has had a phenomenal summer. He's a different, reborn kid."
I expressed to our kids how fortunate they are to have two coordinators who are as good as Enos and Smith are.
"a couple guys offensively who have stood out, both running backs. Keon Hatcher has been a superstar."
"I've had a lot of transition in my coaching career, and its been great with Dan"
"we do 10 minutes with our freshman just lining them up, just for communication and development."

Cole Hedlund had his first miss of the spring today. Been really impressed with him.
