You can't fricking tell LSU fans that our defense wasn't much better off with Beckwith starting at MLB. Welter was terrible. I didn't know he had so many fanboys on here.
I'm not claiming that Beckwith wasn't better but attributing like 50% less RYA to him is absurd. You have to at least consider that the first half of the season was loaded with spread offenses that like to run the ball. You're viewing a situation with a whole lot of dynamic factors and giving one player credit for all of them.
Bama, Ole Miss, Arkansas, A&M. When you played them, all were a pass first offense and/or use a traditional running game. And you gave up few yards.
State, Auburn, Wisconsin. You gave up a ton of yards, they are spread teams, or "swing" teams, that prioritize the running game.
Given the evidence, it seems more likely that the scheme is what was giving most of your trouble, not your MLB.

Scheme and lack of playmakers at DT hurt us in the first half of the season for sure
I still stand by what I said that Bama and Arkansas would have rolled up 200 each with Welter starting. It's not just that Beckwith was better, it's that the whole defense played better with him in.
Arkansas is in no way a pass first offense.
The scheme was a part of the problem but the scheme didn't change between Welter and Beckwith and LSU still finished with the best total D in the league last year.
Keep in mind that before the MSU and Auburn fiascos, LSU and Chavis were known for shutting spread teams (run or pass) the frick down. With Welter starting LSU could not defend the run. Not attributing it all to him but that's simply the truth.

It's not absurd at all. Teams abused us up the middle because they knew if they got past the DL Welter couldn't make a play. Teams played us entirely different when Beckwith showed up and finally had to respect the MLB. Beckwith was LIGHTYEARS better than Welter last year, it really isn't close at all. Our rush defense did a 180 when Beckwith finally became the every down starter.
