Putting up a top 30 offense despite using a Soph QB who turned out to be a lush of limited ability, and switching mid-season to a true Fish, is actually not a bad performance. It's tough to judge Spav considering what he had to work with.

And it isn't as if Sumlin stood pat. He demoted McKinney after one season at OC, and he brought in Dave C. as run game coordinator to shore up that part of the offense.

That's true, but we could easily be top 10.

I think the criticism is fair considering how many weapons he has and how vanilla his play calling was. I really think he's trying to outsmart himself. He knows how to call plays well, but he just thinks to himself, "No, they'll see that coming. I'm going to spend an entire half lulling them to sleep just to set up one play."
