Seems like herniated discs and other similar injuries are far more common than I thought. My main goal is to recover and get back to lifting. I'm not giving up on my strongman dream.
I've heard injections can kill the pain off for a while, do they get to the problem or simply just get rid of pain?

Just get rid of the pain. I only had 2. The first one worked for about 2 weeks. The second one only worked for a day or two.
Only things that will fix the problem is surgery or strengthening the muscles around the herniation enough to where they force the disc back in place. The surgery I had wasn't bad at all. Had it on a Tuesday morning and was back at work the following Monday. 6 weeks before I could really lift anything, and about 2 months before I had full range of motion back. Would recommend if you're a candidate.
