Near the end of the Civil War, thousands of Southerners who lost everything in the war emigrated to Brazil to seek out a new life.
Over the generations, they married into the populace, taught their children Portuguese and their descendents all consider themselves proud Brazilians. But they still honor and commemorate where they came from with a festival every year at one of their earliest churches.
You would swear you were somewhere in Alabama, Carolina or Mississippi by all the country music, confederate uniforms, flags and hoop skirts. Except you're surrounded by people of every skin tone on the scale and bearing names like Da Silva, Ferreira, Vieira.... and Miller, McKnight, Beard.
They celebrate it much like Irish-Americans celebrate their now long strained connection to Ireland... full blown, loud and proud.
translated from portugese as hardly any of the young speak English.
"Dressing up like my great-grandmother and reliving the past makes me appreciate where I came from."

they did a pretty bad job, of the couple thousand descendents (possibly 100,000 if you seek out every single strain), not one family remains that has not intermarried... by the third generation... like before WW1.

The biggest complaint among confederates upon arrival in Brazil was "all the Mexicans."

That's a bit antiquated. I think I've heard that from a dozen stand up comics.
