ISIS is the next generation Taliban. They are evil, no question, and the horrific level of violence has to be stopped. The destruction of history is almost as appalling to me, they are wiping out the history of their own people. I agree, they must go.

What I don't understand is the appeal. Someone commented earlier that kids are flocking to them like flies, and I agree. And not just kids, but mothers with their kids. I simply don't get it. What is the appeal here? What are people finding so attractive about this terrorist group?

And to those who say the easy answer is to glass the region - I don't see how that would in any way be a win for us. Talk about igniting a holy war - there are Muslims all over the world who would rise up in outrage. I don't think we could get away with another Hiroshima-Nagasaki operation today, and we shouldn't want to.

Waiting until we are asked for help by other countries in the region might be the best bet. But if they stage some atrocity here, which we know is coming, all bets are off.

You may have already read it (it was pretty popular after it was written), but reading this article in The Atlantic will probably do more to understand how to combat ISIS than watching a video of their atrocities. Some people say that the information in the article is common knowledge, but I think it does a really nice job of laying out their world view and showing how to use it against them:

The women who are flocking to them perplex me. The men flocking to them, there's good reason. ISIS basically promises a lot of money and a lot of women to men who join them. This resonates with men in the middle east, in particular, as there is a large problem with sexually frustrated youth. The wealthy elite are often allowed to take many wives and mistresses, which means that there are few women for the poorer young men to marry. ISIS promises them brides as well as female captives that they can rape. It's a fricked up situation.

I agree Semo .... the women thing is different than anything we've seen before.

Take Beslan for instance - it was horrific. The brutal slaying of women and children. There were two female terrorists however, who once they realized that all the babies and children were to be murdered, they took their own lives by blowing-themselves-up in a remote part of the school.

That's what women usually do - they'll draw a line when it comes to the babies and the children.

But this new breed of women, they call themselves the black widows or whatever ... I dunno. They are not only killing other people's children, but they are giving birth to children and then using those children as child bombers, etc.
