I dont know. Maybe because we did not win the National Championship game that year which was the criteria?

It's not like we were given the chance and lost... Who else can claim 2004? Not USC, they cheated and vacated. Not Oklahoma, they were given the chance and got stomped.
That leaves Auburn.

Agreed. We didn't win it - just leave it vacant and move on. Anyone that watched the AU and USC games knows that USC wasn't that much better if they were at all but there's nothing anyone can do about it now.
