I agree raw intelligence doesn't say a lot about what a person's religious beliefs are. However, highly intelligent (and even more so well educated) religious people often have very different interpretations than their less intelligent brethren.
Compare the Christian beliefs of someone like Francis Collins with say, Kent Hovind or Ray Comfort. One is clearly brilliant and incorporates their belief into the world around them, while the other two are blinded by ignorance and incorporate the world into what they believe the Bible teaches.
I would say that typically, fundamentalists/literalists/YEC/etc are less intelligent than the more open members of the faith. Some beliefs just cause too much cognitive dissonance in the minds of intelligent educated people to be believed.
