The same way that your car burns gasoline while idling, your body burns calories while sleeping just to keep itself alive. That, and getting up once or twice in the middle of the night to piss. To really track it properly, you have to weigh yourself at the same time every day, preferably first thing in the morning. I weigh myself daily and write it in a log. I may bump up a pound every now and again due to sodium and water retention, but as long as the TREND is downward, I'm good.
