It seems like a guy with a polisci degree would be able to see the rise of soccer came about during the imperial age of Europe. Oddly enough the former British colonies all have a different sport as their favorite.

America has our version of football.
Australia has Aussie Rules Football
New Zealand is all about that Rugby. South Africa too.
India loves cricket.

It's the places that Spain and France got a hold off that took to soccer.

Actually the most popular sport in Australia is Cricket as well. South Africa is tricky because all of the whites love rugby, but soccer is by far more popular with the blacks (bofana bofana). But yeah its pretty hilarious how soccer is England's most beloved sport, yet not really in any of the former colonies
