Actually,

Texas A&M: Michigan State. Programs that had their greatest success in the 40's and 50's but are trending back up. Both had coaches who went on to win multiple national championships at Alabama.

Yup, that is the best comparison. VT has too much recent success, and too little history before its current coach. Plus VT is easily the bigger football brand in their state.
