Because 2 weeks later USC lost by two TD's to Arizona State. During the poll era all that mattered was when you lost. Not who you lost to. Had USC beaten ASU Bama doesnt win the AP title that year and USC is unanimous national champs but they blew a game to a nobody.

AND Bama had the best win. 14-7 over number 1 Penn State.
USC won the Rose Bowl on a play where everyone is America saw Charles White fumble before he crossed the goal line. USC digressed as much as anyone in the ocountry the last 6 weeks of the season. Nobody beats Bama at the end of 1978. PSU was being hailed as maybe the best team EVER prior to Jan 1. But the biggest reason is Bama didnt lose again after USC did.
